During my time at university studying Economics and Politics, I found myself drawn towards social issue content and the merging of education and entertainment. Inspired by production companies such as Participant Media, I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on the representation of African Americans in Hollywood films and the extent to which this influences audiences’ perception of racial inequality in the USA. Since graduating in 2020 whilst the creative industries were suffering amidst the pandemic, I found myself increasingly frustrated by the notion that it would be wise to re-skill towards more ‘traditional’ sectors. Using the iconic song ‘Little Boxes’ from the 1960s which mocked suburbia and conformist attitudes, I created my first short film applying it as the backdrop to the latest contemporary version of this message.
