Director Biography – Josiah Cuneo

Josiah Cuneo is a Brooklyn based filmmaker, composer and choreographer.

In 2014 Roulette hosted the premier of Cuneo’s multimedia performance Scenes, four dance films he wrote, directed and choreographed which was accompanied by a performance of original chamber music by his string trio Dissemble. In 2015 Cuneo’s film Lilt (2017) was the recipient of the Dance Film Association’s Production Grant, and he also produced and edited the film Double Talk which won the Special Jury Price at the Three Rivers Film Festival. His film In Through the Night (2015) premiered at The Anthology Film Archive as part of NewFilmakers New York. In 2016 Cuneo produced, filmed and edited twelve films for artist and filmmaker Duane Michals’s multi-media exhibition Talking Pictures: Twelve Mini-Movies, which Artforum called “dynamic motion pictures that will linger long after you’ve left the gallery.” The film The Pleasures of the Glove went on to win the award for Best Dark Comedy from the Festigious Film Festival, and Cuneo won Best Editing from the NYC Indie Film Awards for his work on What is Real. In 2017 Cuneo was the recipient of a Jerome Foundation Grant and Artist Residency at Roulette, New York. There he premiered the multimedia performance The Paper Dance, in which he wrote, directed, choreographed and composed a new work for twenty performers. He premiered his most recent film Lilt (2017) in New York at the Chain NYC Film Festival, and it has since won the Best Experimental Film Award from the Festigious Film Festival Los Angeles.

Josiah Cuneo received his BFA from University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his work has been featured at Roulette, New York; Chain NYC Film Festival, New York; Toronto Arthouse Film Festival, Toronto; Dance Film Association and DCTV’s Long Legs Short Films, New York; Otion Front Studio’s Scarce Ops, New York; Light-Soluble Mediums at The Picture Show, New York; NewFilmmakers New York; Exit Art, New York; Gallery Satori, New York; Issue Project Room, New York; Phantom Brain Exchange, Montague, MA; Sevengaits, Southbridge, MA and Hampden Gallery, Amherst, MA.

Director Statement

The music and script for this film were written to express the changing nature of memories. I was able to work with a talented cast to bring it to life, so please enjoy, and thank you for your consideration.
